È nata a mwdaPayson nello mwdqUtah, ma ha vissuto la maggior parte della sua gioventù in mwdgAlaska. È figlia di Atz Kilcher e Lenedra Caroll, e cugina dell'attrice e cantante statunitense mwdwQ'orianka Kilcher. Da bambina si esibiva in un duo con il padre nei bar e negli hotel di mweaAnchorage, imparando da lui lo mweqjodel.cite-ref-bio-1-0[1] All'età di quindici anni, mentre viveva a mwfgInterlochen nel mwfwMichigan per motivi di studio, ha imparato a suonare la chitarra e l'anno successivo ha iniziato a scrivere canzoni.
